Created for the packaging of the Sun album, I’ll be the Same, Gangle is a formal evolution of a reductionist approach to lettering that Mark Gowing has been utilising for many years. Drawn on a strict grid with a minimum of parts, Gangle is an intentionally awkward typeface that renders characters as a collection of strokes. Letterforms are truncated and almost rudimentary, while the gridded nature of the type allows letters to be joined and layered in unusual ways. The resulting abstractions challenge traditional word and letter constructions and bridge the relationships between typeset and handwritten language.
